“It was at that point,” said the prosecutor, “that Danzele Johnson used significant effort—he was a big guy” and kicked in the back door and an interior door of Scott’s home. Leading the way Johnson and the three others went inside and proceeded to rummage through Scott’s possessions. Referencing Jose Quiroz’s testimony before and during his plea agreement, the prosecutor told the courtroom the defendants actively searched and tore through the rooms and drawers “because Mr. Scott was old school” and kept his money inside his house.

As the four intruders were downstairs, Scott awakened from a nap, “felt a ‘boom’ and it startled him.’” When Scott heard a second loud noise, the prosecutor stated he grabbed not just his cell phone but a hand gun as well.

“It wasn’t his first thought, but it was enough to provoke him to get his handgun,” explained the prosecutor. She said it isn’t one of Scott’s “fond” possessions but rather a “what if” possession.

The details of what happened next, we may never fully know explained the prosecutor. Scott said he loudly made his way down the stairs, armed with a pistol, and saw two individuals standing in the doorway to his spare bedroom, one in his kitchen and another in front of him. She said that at that point in time all Scott remembers is firing his gun.

“We will not know how Danzele Johnson was struck with a bullet right above his sternum,” Becker added.

The prosecution went on to state how Johnson was one of the two individuals standing in the doorway, and once shots were fired the two made their way into a closet with Jose Quiroz.

“While they were in that closet they were hiding as Rodney Scott was holding them at gunpoint as he called police…no other shots were fired,” Becker claimed.wholesale fashion shoes It was then, prosecution argued, that Sparks came over to aid his friends. Becker stated Quiroz dialed the cell phone that was left behind with Sparks while he was inside the closet, and asked Sparks to create a distraction.

Sparks saw Scott inside the home with a gun and took off, stated the prosecutor. After calling police, she noted how Scott recognized Quiroz as his neighbor from across the street. Quiroz denied the familiarity and, in a “desperate attempt” to get out of there, the prosecutor explained that he knocked over an entertainment center and dove through a window into the alleyway.

Witness statements from later on in the trial covered the chase and arrest of Quiroz in greater detail, and the prosecution refocused its attention on wrapping up its account of the day’s events.

“When you break into somebody’s home, you violate their sanctity and security,” the prosecutor added before turning over to the defense.

The ruling could put pressure on the Obama administration, which only a few days earlier took the unusual step of vetoing an ITC ruling in favor of Samsung that would have barred the sale of some older Apple iPhones and iPads.

The administration will now have 60 days to decide whether to let the Samsung ban take effect. The impression of favoring domestic over foreign companies could raise trade tensions with Samsung's home country of South Korea.

Samsung, while expressing disappointment with the ruling, said the order won't hurt the availability of its products—an apparent reference to design changes made to remove infringing features from its smartphones and tablets.

"We have already taken measures to ensure that all of our products will continue to be available in the United States," a Samsung spokesman said.

Specific Samsung products affected by the ITC order weren't spelled out, though an earlier ruling by an agency judge pointed to older products that include the Galaxy S II smartphone and Galaxy 10.1 tablet. The order potentially could have an impact beyond older Samsung devices that Apple challenged at the time.

Friday's ruling is another setback to Samsung in its global patent battles with Apple. Earlier Friday, Samsung appeared to have a difficult time during an appeals court hearing in another patent fight between the two companies.

Legal experts say the Apple and Samsung cases are based on different kinds of patents that would justify different conclusions by the administration.

The ITC found that Samsung infringed on parts of one Apple patent that covers elements of swiping a finger across the display of a device, a key feature of nearly all smartphones and tablets. It also cited parts of another patent related to headphone jacks.

The ITC decision isn't a complete victory for Apple. The trade body rejected some claims made by Apple and absolved Samsung from infringing on patents associated with the most basic design of the iPhone.

In trying to persuade the ITC not to impose a ban, Samsung and partner Google Inc.—whose Android software is used by Samsung—warned of potential dire consequences for consumers and competition in the mobile market. Samsung, for example, argued that the ruling could cause widespread shortages of mobile phones, particularly among smaller U.S. carriers, "that would take many months to rectify."

But Samsung also has been working on adapting products so they would no longer infringe on Apple patents, a process known as designing or working around an order.

The ITC said Friday that its ban doesn't apply to the "adjudicated design around products" found not to infringe on claims of the two patents.

Apple and Samsung have been tangling in courts around the globe over patents since 2011. Tensions began building after Apple shook up the mobile-device market in 2007 with the iPhone and Samsung followed up with competing products.

The companies have wielded an array of patents against each other. As part of its findings, the ITC overturned an administrative judge's earlier finding that Samsung infringed on a potentially important Apple patent on the shape of the iPhone.

"With today's decision, the ITC has joined courts around the world in Japan, Korea, Germany, Netherlands and California by standing up for innovation and rejecting Samsung's blatant copying of Apple's products," a company spokeswoman said. "Protecting real innovation is what the patent system should be about."

Last week's veto by the Obama administration was the first of an ITC order in more than 25 years.

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman made the decision based on policy concerns about companies obtaining product bans based on patents that cover technology used in industrywide standards. A spokeswoman for Mr. Froman said the trade representative would "begin a thorough interagency review process."

Friday's case doesn't raise the same issue about so-called standard-essential patents, but it still may raise political and trade sensitivities for the Obama administration. After last week's veto, the South Korean government said it would be closely watching the ITC's ruling Friday.

But Lyle Vander Schaaf, a specialist in ITC matters at the law firm Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, predicted the order against Samsung won't be vetoed because of the different legal issues involved.

For years, Canadian consumers have been able to buy high-end smartphones at highly subsidized prices. Carriers have been happy to slash hundreds of dollars off the price of a new iPhone from Apple Inc. or Galaxy from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., as long as the customer agreed to a long-term contract, which allowed the carrier to make more than the amount of the subsidy in fees. If a customer wants out of the contract, a hefty penalty is charged.

As a result, carriers have less incentive to offer high-end phones at significant discounts – and evidence suggests many Canadians are not willing to pay anything close to the full price for such phones, which can often cost more than $700.

“We have been offering customers mid-tier devices on two-year contracts for quite some time,” said Patricia Trott of Rogers. “As the industry moves to two-year contracts across all device categories, we expect to see a larger volume of customers migrating to mid-tier devices.”

Telus Corp. announced details of its new “SharePlus” pricing scheme for smartphones on Tuesday. Instead of raising the up-front price of its phones, the carrier is still offering subsidies of up to $500 on some high-end devices. However the cost of paying back those subsidies is now amortized over two years, rather than three, making for higher monthly fees. Customers will pay $55 a month on a two-year contract for unlimited talk and text for a subsidized high-end phone, $45 a month for a low-end phone and $35 a month if they bring their own device.

“Overall, we take our cues from the market and what our customers are demanding when it comes to our device selection,” Telus spokeswoman Donna Ramirez said. “We are committed to offering our customers a wide range of smartphones and tablets to choose from both at the high end, mid and low-end of the spectrum based on their different needs and that’s something that we’ll continue to do despite changes in the industry.”

The rise of mid-tier smartphones in Canada was perhaps inevitable, given the shrinking functionality gap between high-end and low-end devices. During quarterly earnings announcements earlier this month, the smartphone industry’s two biggest players, Samsung and Apple, both indicated that average selling prices are starting to slip, even as both companies continue to sell a healthy number of units. That decline is at least partially due to the fact that lower-priced offerings from both companies are starting to make up a larger portion of overall sales.

The augmentation of organic life with artificial technology is a perpetual favourite of both movie-makers and scientists alike, and it's in this field that many people in healthcare are becoming excited.

One of the companies leading the way in this technological field is Cambridge Consultants, a product development company working in the UK and US to create innovative tools to help other firms find new ways to support their work.

Dr Robert Milner (pictured), who is a senior consultant at Cambridge Consultants, discussed the issue at Digitas Health's ThinkDigital 2013 forum last month, which explored how the rise of mobile technology is affecting healthcare and improving patient adherence and outcomes.

Although never quite reaching the realm of science fiction, Dr Milner discussed examples of how low-cost, wireless devices can connect healthcare products with smartphones in very exciting ways. These included the simple but elegant and incredibly useful potential for a pill bottle connected to wireless capabilities to contact a patient's smartphone if they happen to leave the house without taking their medication with them.

But where this technology can truly shine is in chronic diseases, for example in the ability to connect an asthma inhaler with a phone or PC and get data straight from the device and create active patient health records. How this technology can help the huge number of people who suffer from asthma - half of whom are thought to be non-adherent – is still to be seen, although the technology adds a dimension that was previously missing and could bring patients closer to their disease.

This use of data to support better patient outcomes is already being seen in diabetes, according to Dr Milner, where there is a strong community of patients sharing information on how they are handling their own condition. By communicating this data in a public setting, people with diabetes can support other people with the  condition and share tips on how to live more healthily and avoid the many side effects.

But the potential for wireless technology in diabetes doesn't stop at information tracking and sharing, and Dr Milner revealed one of Cambridge Consultants' most exciting projects – the artificial pancreas.

Working with the Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS) at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge Consultants is developing an application that will allow a continuous glucose meter to autonomously communicate with a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth and then link to an insulin pump attached to someone with diabetes.

This would effectively create an artificial pancreas that the company hopes can be worn by people with type 1 diabetes at home without nurse supervision. “It's a really exciting area and it is at the forefront at the adoption of this use of smartphone in the treatment of disease,” Dr Milner told the ThinkDigital audience.

Greater use of the iPhone's ability to connect with devices is likely to increase too, with the addition of Bluetooth Smart to the iPhone 4s. Despite receiving little fanfair as part of the phone's launch,Electricity monitor this technology allows smartphone accessories to go beyond Bluetooth headsets, branching out to activity monitors, including Nike's development of a shoe to track running performance that connects directly with an iPhone app.

Whereas this sort of device is likely to be of more interest to consumers, explained Dr Milner, its potential in healthcare is a spectrum that stretches from fitness monitoring devices to ones more directly related to health, such as weight tracking, all the way through to device/app combinations that can help people diagnosed with a disease manage their condition.

And development in the more clinical end of the spectrum is being accelerated by developments in the consumer side, according to Dr Milner.

“People are seeing things coming out the consumer end of the spectrum and they are expecting that to be available for them as a medical product,” he said.

But there are challenges for the tool-makers behind such 'quantified self' products, with Dr Milner explaining that the regulation of apps is becoming a reality, making it harder for new products to come to market.

The fast pace of mobile technology can also be a hindrance as well as a boon. Phones can come out with a new phone operating every six months, meaning there is a constant need for all tools to update and adapt.

On top of this, few patients ever just have one chronic disease, and co-morbidities pose a major challenge in this area. Going forward, any company considering making an app for diabetes, for example, needs to think about how that app interacts with one for another chronic condition, such as depression or cardiovascular problems.

“How do you make that tech work together in way that's safe?” asked Dr Milner of the ThinkDigital audience. “Those are the areas where there is uncertainty and people are looking at how they can solve it,” he concluded.

Before Ben Quilty travelled to Afghanistan in 2011 to be an Australian Defence Force official war artist, he underwent "Force Preparation", the same emotional and logistical training undertaken by all soldiers about to be deployed. He listened to Afghans explain their culture and mores, and learnt to disarm an AK-47. He was prepared psychologically for being kidnapped, tortured and raped, and taught to spot cars carrying bombs. "Then, after the soldiers said goodbye to their partners, children and parents," says Quilty, "we got on an unmarked jumbo for the 14-hour flight to Al Minhad Air Base in Dubai, and the plane didn't even have in-flight entertainment. I thought that if anyone deserved to have movies, these guys did."

Quilty, who won the 2011 Archibald Prize for his portrait of the late artist Margaret Olley, hates war and is terrified of it. The three rockets that landed in the Australian military base the first night he arrived in Afghanistan didn't help. He had anti-war friends chastise him for even going in the first place; others described his resulting show, Ben Quilty: After Afghanistan - which depicted the Australian soldiers he met in Afghanistan - as pro-war.

"I was like, 'What the hell, I'm an artist, I have no rules,'" says the 39-year-old, who quickly understood the incessant, glowering pressure soldiers lived with. "That's what travel has done for me: made me more ambitious in the scale or ideas of my work, and making me realise that there are no rules. If you start looking for rules, you're done for before you even start."

In his vast, shed-like studio behind the Big Potato in Robertson in the NSW southern highlands ("Yep, it gets bloody freezing in here!"), Quilty's languid frame is draped on a weathered, yellow armchair. A dozen blank canvases hang on one wall, four half-finished works on another. He leans forward with intense, roguish blue eyes when he's making a point, slumps back when describing how he's fed up with how Australia treats Afghan refugees. Then he says, "See that bloody bruise," dropping his trousers to reveal a blotchy inner thigh. "I pulled my groin playing soccer here a few weeks back."

While there's a certain domestic permanence to his existence now - Quilty has been in the southern highlands with wife Kylie and their two children, Joe and Olivia, since 2007 - he seems to have spent more of his life on the road than most. As a child growing up in Kenthurst, in Sydney's north-west, he was home-schooled for two years as his parents took him and his two brothers on two extended caravan trips around Australia. "I can remember running around barefoot with the indigenous kids at the base of Uluru where we were staying," he says. "They were intrigued with our toys and they taught us to use their woomeras and boomerangs."

When he failed to get into art school after year 12, Quilty raised hell on a coming-of-age trip around Australia in his Commodore station wagon. Then, after finally being accepted into Sydney College of the Arts and graduating in 1994, he worked at Channel Seven as a tape editor until he won the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship in 2002, which financed four months in Paris and Germany. Later, he won an Australian Council Scholarship and spent four months in Barcelona. He's stayed for weeks in Seoul and Hong Kong showing at art fairs, and travelled from New York to New Orleans to see the Blues Festival. "As an artist, travelling to London or Paris or New York and seeing what human endeavour has achieved is inspirational," he says. "In a different way, looking up at the stars in the middle of the Australian desert is just as powerful."

Recently, Quilty has been inspired by two death-row inmates in Bali's Kerobokan Prison, Bali Nine members Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan. Late last year, following a "very moving message" Sukumaran wrote asking for some painting tips, "including some specific questions about medium", says Quilty, the artist travelled to Bali.

In the eight years that Sukumaran has been incarcerated in Kerobokan, he has helped set up a computer school, studied certificate-level philosophy and is undertaking an arts degree majoring in fine arts. With Chan, he set up an operation printing T-shirts to sell at local markets. Other inmates smelt silver for jewellery or grow bonsai. "The prison lets the inmates have ideas," says Quilty. "You send someone to Long Bay Prison, which is one of the most soul-destroying places ever, and good luck if you get out of there intact."

Quilty is now using Kerobokan Prison as a collaborative crucible for artistic collectives from Australia and Indonesia. On his three visits, he has given Sukumaran one-on-one help with portraits (one of which Quilty returned with to enter in this year's Archibald) and has also taught the basics of painting to larger groups of inmates. "I've been making work all my life about masculinity and my own masculinity," he says, "and I'm intrigued by these young men and their situation. I did really stupid, dangerous, self-indulgent stuff as a kid. They did the same things - admittedly with a far bigger risk - and now they're facing their own mortality."

A jury began deliberations on Tuesday in the case of a former Nevada developer and political powerbroker who was called a greedy "ultimate insider" by prosecutors accusing him of illegally funneling nearly $150,000 in campaign money to U.S. Sen. Harry Reid

Harvey Whittemore, 59, a former lobbyist and head of a billion-dollar real estate company, faces four felony counts tied to claims that he gave money to family members and employees to make contributions he had promised to Reid without revealing himself as the source.

"He kept his promise and he broke the law to do it," Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Olshan said during final arguments before the case went to the jury.

"This wasn't just any old promise. This was a promise to Harry Reid, the most powerful man in the U.S. Congress," Olshan said. "When he made these contributions, he was the ultimate insider. He was making millions of dollars and getting personal thank-you notes from the most prominent politicians in the country. Harvey Whittemore was the king of the hill."

Whittemore's lawyers said he broke no laws by giving $5,000 checks as gifts to family members and as gifts or bonuses to 29 employees and their spouses, who then wrote checks for the maximum allowable $4,300 to the campaign group Friends of Harry Reid.

The lawyers said Whittemore, former chief of the Wingfield Nevada Group, suggested the employees and family members contribute to Reid, but made it clear that was voluntary.

"None said they were coerced," Dominic Gentile, Whittemore's lead defense counsel, said in his closing argument. "All knew him as a man of integrity. All said they trusted him."

Whittemore has pleaded not guilty to making excessive campaign contributions, making contributions in the name of another, causing a false statement to be made to the Federal Election Commission, and making a false statement to the FBI. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.

U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks gave the jury of six men and six women 36 specific instructions before the two sides made closing arguments.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Myhre said Whittemore used "straw donors" or conduits to contribute illegally to Reid. He said that while most claimed they couldn't recall details of their encounters with Whittemore, federal investigators pieced together a detailed paper trail of the transactions.

"The beauty of this case is the documents don't forget," Myhre said. "He paid the conduits extra money. He solicited the contributions and added a little sweetener. ... And everybody worked in lock step. There is no deviation. This is a highly orchestrated, planned event that shows he was up to no good."

Gentile told the jury it was an important distinction that Whittemore wrote the checks to employees out of his personal account entitled H. Harvey Whittemore attorney fund, not Wingfield Nevada Group, because the law at the time forbid employers from reimbursing workers for such contributions.

"Wingfield Nevada Group was their employer. He was their boss, but he was not their employer," he said. He said Whittemore encouraged them to become politically involved and helped make it possible for some to do so financially.

"Some could not have made the size of contribution they made. He empowered them to do it," Gentile said. "But did he use them as conduits? They don't think so."

Gentile said Whittemore's motive was to help re-elect Reid and other Congress members who helped secure federal funding for a university medical research center that Whittemore and his wife Annette helped found to seek cures for diseases, including one their daughter has.

"Does it make sense he would throw Annette Whittemore and his other children and his father and his employees under the bus?" he said. The man is either smart or he's not. He's either honest, or he's not."

But Myhre said Whittemore was driven solely by greed.

"Not to get more money but greed in the sense of more power. It's about trying to be on the short list that senators and congressmen call when they need money," he said. "It's about him, it's about his power, his prestige. That's why he did it."

It is the 60th anniversary of Elizabeth II's coronation on Sunday, which was preceded by the news that Mount Everest had been "conquered" by a British team. In fact, Tenzing Norgay was a Nepalese Indian Sherpa and Edmund Hillary was a New Zealander, but this was close enough. It was a serendipity I like, because both coronation and ascent of the impossible mountain were, in their ways, Freudian daydreams that imagined an ecstatic national unity that was entirely false and utterly pointless. Laurence Olivier narrated the film of the coronation, and nothing could have felt more impressive, or more staged.

These are bad times for republicans. The last three years have been full of royal pageantry – an invocation of a reactionary past where a pretty duchess who has done nothing but marry and conceive is called the face of modern femininity. Elites harden and grow more wealthy and remote, watching the jubilee flotilla from their private perches, either bought or lobbied for. The alienation of elected politicians from voters makes the very air seem dangerous. That Maxima, the new queen of Holland, was crowned last month wearing what looked like the Miss World crown is the only amusing thing about this monarchical resurgence. But aristocrats know they have to endure being laughed at, and I do not think they mind. The benefits are obvious to them.

The royal wedding and the diamond jubilee were, respectively, a drunken "fairytale", and a thank-you so overwrought it gave Elizabeth II's husband cystitis – ladies and gentleman of the press, prepare your headlines. The anniversary of the coronation is more fascinating than either, because it exposes the most ancient roots of monarchy, a childlike need for gods and intercession, when I hoped we had done with both.

The film of the coronation service was re-released in cinemas last year. I sat in the darkness and watched it. I was riveted neither by the peers and their ladies, shouting allegiance in furs, nor by the young Princess Margaret's almost pornographic beauty and obvious unhappiness. It was the monarch's status as holy intercessor between God and commoner; as sacrificial victim; as human font. (As jewellery model?) On Coronation Day the Times wrote: "The Queen stands for the soul as well as the body of the Commonwealth. In her is incarnate ... the whole of society ... she represents the life of her people." Does she? Does she really? And can we not do better?

Perhaps because the answer is so obviously yes, or because the palace PR professionals think a third year of pomp in a recession would be vulgar, this particular anniversary is fairly downbeat. There will be a service at Westminster Abbey, and a Coronation festival in the grounds of Buckingham Palace to advertise the wares of royal warrant holders, because the most popular apology for monarchy these days is that it "sells Britain" – yes it does, and as what?

It is the BBC which will make the most fuss, and this is interesting for those who call the BBC progressive, and not as a compliment. On Monday it screens the documentary The Queen: A Passion for Horses; one excited newspaper announced it with the headline "Queen Rides to Feel Human" which, if true, entirely supports my point. Perhaps we should reinstitute the ancient royal custom of washing feet? She would do it, I think, if they were hooves.

This will be nothing to the anniversary coverage of the Tory press, which, as the death of Margaret Thatcher demonstrated, loves nothing better than a demi-god – except perhaps two demi-gods. Last Thursday the Telegraph noted that the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall tried to fly to Hay-on-Wye to open the literary festival, but their helicopter broke. So they drove there in a car, and this, according to the Telegraph, was miraculous.

It is not so much what monarchy does that offends me, but what it does not do. It does not tell us that we are free and equal, and that any child born can do anything; in this, it is far more reactionary than Christianity. Instead it tells us, as it always has, that our places in society are ordained by an invisible God, and we should know them. If she is above, we can only be below – is this why conservatives adore it, it being so like a profitable business? And, to distract us, there is old patriotic nonsense: reach for the stars, children, and ignore the mud, even as it chokes you. All this will be remembered on Sunday.

In the midst of interviewing ABK Biomedical’s new CEO Pat O’Connor on the Halifax company’s direction, I realized that the story I should write was about O’Connor himself.

Last October, the company announced it had raised $1.25 million in funding from a variety of sources, and co-founder and chief scientific officer Daniel Boyd said, almost parenthetically, that it had also hired a new chief executive from Ireland, a man called Pat O’Connor, a former executive with Boston Scientific Corporation, a worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical devices.

When I finally interviewed him this month, I was astonished by his savvy and industry knowledge as he explained that ABK is at a critical juncture. The company, which is mainly focused on treating uterine fibroids, or benign tumours in a woman’s uterus, is now completing important development testing in preparation for applying for regulatory approval in Europe.

With the support of Springboard Atlantic, an organization that aids commercialization of university research, ABK a few years ago developed OccluRad — tiny bio-compatible glass beads that can treat uterine fibroids. About 40 per cent of women over 35 worldwide develop these tumours, and many require a hysterectomy. Yet radiologists are now tackling this problem in a minimally invasive manner by injecting beads into a target area and essentially blocking the area around the fibroid and starving it of blood.

The problem is that the beads now used in this procedure aren’t visible under fluoroscopy (an imaging technique that uses X-rays to obtain real-time moving images), so the radiologists have to introduce a dye that is visible to confirm that the right blood vessels are blocked.

ABK Biomedical’s innovation is the development of new particles, or to use the clinical term, radiopaque embolic beads, that are visible under fluoroscopy so the dye is no longer needed. That reduces costs, makes the procedure quicker and eliminates the risk of a toxic reaction from the dye.

O’Connor explained that the company now has its corporate structure in place, has lined up manufacturers and partners and is now assessing where it should first seek regulatory approval. The options being assessed are the U.S., Canada and the European Union, or any combination of the three.

The company will begin design verification testing, which includes such things as pre-clinical study, bio-compatibility testing and design verification bench testing, in August, for completion around January 2014.

Preliminary indications reveal the company may be able to receive approval for some applications with rigorous pre-clinical tests rather than full clinical trials. That means regulatory approval in whatever market it chooses first could come in mid-2014.

However, O’Connor added that that does not mean the company won’t proceed with clinical trials later in 2014 — depending on a couple of factors. “Even if you don’t need it (a clinical trial) for regulatory approval, it’s very powerful in gaining market approval,” said O’Connor. Also, patients with uterine fibroids are otherwise healthy and this will drive the requirement for ABK to generate clinical data for regulatory approval in some regions.

What O’Connor was displaying was a knowledge of the medical device development understood by few people — if any — in the Halifax medical device community. For example, when we discussed the continuing research that Boyd and his team was doing at Dalhousie University, and how this could lead to new products, O’Connor explained the challenges of bringing a product from the R&D stage to the market. These include not only safety and efficacy, but the market opportunity, the routes to market, the cost of making the product and what price it could bring in.

The trick, therefore, is not just to develop a device that improves health outcomes and is safe, but also one that can be manufactured and sold with acceptable margins. Any technology selected for development within ABK will be assessed with all those factors in mind.
